Western Sahara

Currently under a cease-fire arrangement institituted by the United Nations in 1991, Western Sahara is still seeking autonomy. Upon the withdrawal of Spain, the region was literally annexed by Morocco and Mauritania. Mauritania later withdrew its claims, leaving the sovereignty issue in the hands of Polisario Front and the Moroccan government. Most of the visitors to this forlorn country are volunteers, aid workers and the UN peacekeeping forces. Perhaps the attraction of visiting this destination is for one to say, "I have been there".
